According to Greek mythology, Rhodes rose out of the sea as a gift to the sun god, Helios, who clothed it with light, giving rise to its title of island of the sun. It still enjoys more hours of sunshine than any other Greek island. Whitewashed houses gleam under endless blue skies while crystal clear seas lap the island’s sandy beaches. The view of the village of Lindos with its houses spilling down the hillside to the sandy bay is one of the most photographed in all Greece.
Summer seems to last forever on Rhodes, the largest and greenest of the Dodecanese islands. The tranquil beaches, the simple pleasures of a slower pace of life and the rejuvenating properties of fresh air, sparkling, refreshing seas and the Mediterranean diet make it the perfect location for relaxing and recharging your batteries.
To say that Rhodes is just a destination for sun, sand and sea holidays however would be to ignore the magic of the history and mythology which has formed so much of present day civilization. At the crossroads of civilizations through its history, the island has a richly fascinating heritage. The capital and main port, Rhodes Town, is the biggest lived-in mediaeval city in Europe, still fully encircled by walls miles long and full of buildings unchanged since the crusading Knights of St John put them there.
The island has countless interesting archaeological sites, including ancient cities, castles and temples. The countryside is truly spectacular and amazingly varied. Travelling around the island you will recognize scenery from many films and TV programmes. A unique sight is that of Prassonisi, the southernmost tip of the island, where the Aegean and Mediterranean meet. The extraordinary phenomenon this causes makes it another shot for the photo album and a favourite of windsurfers from all around the world.
Rhodes caters for all tastes in terms of nightlife and entertainment. There is a vast selection of traditional Greek tavernas all around the island, offering simply prepared, mouth-wateringly fresh local produce and local wines. The fish tavernas in charming seaside villages such as Charaki are hard to beat if you’re looking for fish or seafood.
Rhodes Town has some first-class restaurants, as well as a large range of bars, cafes, nightclubs and even a casino! Many of the seaside towns and villages feature a smaller selection if you don’t feel like travelling too far from “home”.
The island’s climate makes it ideal for growing vines and the island’s main vintner has won awards for several of its wines – a wine tasting session could be well worth considering!
With all this to offer, to visit Rhodes and spend your well-earned holiday within the walls of a complex of identical studios would not be doing the island justice. To help you make the most of your stay there you really need someone who knows the island literally like the back of their hand. Rhodos Direct Holidays, established in 1992, has a unique understanding of this magical island and a special relationship with its people. This means they are able to offer their customers exceptional accommodation in a vast selection of private properties, which range from simple cottages to luxurious villas where you will miss none of your creature comforts.
